App Of The Week: Mixologist

IN SHORT: If you’re not a drinker, or prefer you spirits as they fall out of the bottle, look away now. If you like a good cocktail, though, there could hardly be an easier way to string together a few fabulous mixers than with the Mixologist application. Think nearly 8000 recipes that can be searched by name and by the alcohol and mixers you have available, all conveniently fused into recipes for bar quality concoctions.

THE LOWDOWN: This could be the perfect date-assistant application. There aren’t many people who wouldn’t enjoy a good cocktail on a first date, and the ability to knock one together with almost whatever happens to be at hand can only add to the effect. It’s not all about cocktails, though. This application is for the planner in us all, too, with jello shots, hot drinks, punches, shooters and even non-alcoholic mixes on offer on top of the more bog standard blended selection. To make it all more interesting, there’s a ‘random’ button (and it really is random, with nearly 8000 recipes and more than 1,300 ingredients to choose from). You can even choose drinks based on your available glassware, as well as the (possibly more helpful) option to base cocktails on available alcohol and soft drinks. In amongst it all, you’ll learn (or simply repeat for effect) the correct bartending terms, or you can get stuck into video tutorials and search for the nearest liquor store using your GPS function to top up when the cupboard runs dry. In other words, this is a true night out saver, the kind of application that you’ll be digging out of your pocket time and time again for everything from helping an uneducated barman fulfil you heart desire to working out how best to use up the dregs. You can get a free version, too, though you’ll have to sift through the ads and you’ll lose a fair few of the features. When the full version is a mere $0.99, it barely seems worth it…

PRICE: $0.99 for the full version, or go with the free version just to see what you’re getting.
