Looking to the future, the convergence of broadband networks and mobile phones is coming.  The advent of wimax and increasingly powerful mobile broadband makes the prospect of voice calls via data networks more likely.

The 2010 Broadband Customer Satisfaction Report highlighted some interesting thoughts about the UK’s internet access options. The study, which surveyed over seven-thousand broadband users from across the UK, found that broadband bills had reduced by just over four percent from last year, while average connection speeds had increased by approximately 33 percent.

It also looked at the UK’s broadband satisfaction rates, highlighting the difference in satisfaction for some of the UK’s biggest home and mobile broadband companies. O2 topped the list with a 92% satisfaction rate, while well-known broadband provider Orange found itself in last place, boasting a mere 44% customer satisfaction level.

But despite offering one of the most competitively priced and acclaimed services in the UK, O2′s service is by no means the best on offer anywhere. We’ve looked at global broadband statistics and aimed to find the world’s best broadband connections. Where, in Asia, Europe, or the Americas, is the world’s best broadband connection found?

A 2008 study from Cisco Systems found that almost all of the world’s fastest broadband connections were in East Asia. Japan boasts the world’s most developed and extensive home broadband network, with almost all of the nation’s home able to access high-speed internet connections without regular downtime.

South Korea also appeared high on the list, claiming the world’s fastest broadband network system and an incredible broadband penetration rate. While still offering the world’s fastest connection speeds, South Korea lost out to Japan overall due to lower customer satisfaction rates and less consistent all-round internet speeds.

It’s worth noting that East Asia’s broadband advantage isn’t just due to early investment and rapid development, but a vastly more urbanised population than its European competitors. Seoul and Tokyo, two of the world’s largest city areas, have the fastest and most reliable broadband networks in Asia.

Sweden has been named Europe’s best broadband location, offering subscribers the greatest mix of connection speeds and always-on reliability. The BBC recently reported that the average connection speed in Sweden is 7.4Mbps, almost twice that of the United Kingdom and over five times the mean connection speed in Poland.

Germany and France offer some of Europe’s most competitively priced and reliable broadband services, though both lose out to their Nordic neighbours when it comes to sheer speed. The average connection speed in Germany is 4.8Mbps, while urban French connections tend to hover between four and five megabits per second.

The United States remains the world’s most connected nation, boasting an impressive sixty-six million connections and one of the world’s most developed cable networks. The vast majority of American internet subscribers rely on cable connections for their service, with broadband access relatively limited and DSL usage slowly falling out of favour.

With home broadband penetration levelling off and mobile broadband becoming increasingly popular, we could soon see a change in the world’s best broadband nations. A number of UK-based telecommunications companies are offering competitively priced mobile broadband, giving many mobile subscribers little reason to invest in a dedicated home connection.

THE LOWDOWN: This game is a real compulsive one, the type of game that has you playing level after level and struggling with the mind-blowing strategy more and more. The free version is still extremely comprehensive, yet can still be played a single level at a time should you need something to occupy you for a minute or two whilst waiting for a phone call or suchlike. It’s that kind of fliexibility that makes it a bit special, and despite being so intrinsically simple, few games have got so much playtime on out iPhone. The paid version does come with a few interesting little extras (and a host more levels), but frankly the free one is so comprehensive that it doesn’t seem worth the money until you’re thoroughly addicted. We’d give you ten minutes after kicking off!

Airplanes sounds like B.o.B with a few random extras, but the big name guests are proof positive that he’s a respected member of the chart community these days.

4. Ke$ha – Your Love Is My Drug (last week – 4)

The second big single from Ke$ha’s breakthrough debut album ‘Animal’, which – while hardly a shocking chart development – has added a feisty, party-girl vibe to the top end of the chart. She’s certainly not the most subtle of singers, nor does she have the most breathtaking of voices, but her songs seem to resonate. Party on.

5. Travie McCoy featuring Bruno Mars – Billionaire (last week – 11)

In imagining that he might become a billionaire, and how that would change his life, Travie McCoy’s debut single has taken him one step closer to getting there. This is a breakthrough that looks like going far, and completes one of the most urban-looking singles charts of even this hip-hop dominated year. One to watch, we think, especially given the big rise.

US Albums Chart:

1. Jack Johnson – To The Sea (new entry)

Having already notched up a UK number one, Jack Johnson doubles up with a US number one in his first week. The man’s had an enviable life, starting as pro surfer and going on to become one of the most popular acoustic musicians of the last decade. To The Sea is typical Johnson, soulful and cleverly political. Great stuff.

2. Justin Bieber – My World 2.0 (last week – 3)

Up one once again for Bieber volume 2, an album that must me on more than a few young teenagers shelves now that it’s notched eleven weeks near the top of the notoriously flaky US album charts. Bieber’s got more enemies than friends by all accounts, but that won’t stop him. Grab Justin Bieber’s latest ringtones, here.

3.  Glee The Music Volume 3: Showstoppers (last week – 1)

The most successful effort of the Glee series so far drops from the number one spot, but is still doing storming business for an album full of not overly unique cover songs. Still, it’s the series that sells this one, and we can’t say we’re hugely surprised with the way it’s gone.

4. Lady Antebellum – Need You Now (last week – 4)

There’s an argument at this point for Lady Antebellum being the biggest act of 2010. They’ve certainly given Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber a run for their money when it comes to chart position. Download Lady Antebellum ringtones here.

Neither of whom, incidentally, are playing in the tournament.

4. David Guetta featuring Chris Willis – Gettin’ Over you (last week – 1)

Blasted out of its number one spot by the World Cup invasion, Guetta’s latest has done well, especially given that the popular remix has now disappeared into chart oblivion. 5. Eminem – Not Afraid (last week – 6)

Eminem seems to have been gone so long that it almost feels like he’s not a part of the music scene anymore. IN SHORT: iTeleport is a great way to connect to your computer from anywhere in the world, allowing you to act as though you’re sat next to your desktop through your iPhone. Limited, of course, but for those new to VNC this seems revolutionary. We’ve had a lot of fun with it.

THE LOWDOWN: Now in its fourth incarnation and on offer for both Windows and Mac computers, iTeleport basically does exactly what it says on the tin. You can access multiple machines on the same network, providing you’ve taken the time to enable them, and the displays are shown in great resolution straight onto your iPhone or iPad. There’s some great gesture control for zooming, clicking through to different features and generally messing with your options. The there’s the typing options, clever mouse control and more other options than you’ll probably ever play with. Having said that, this is at the expensive end of the app market, and that will put plenty of people off. One for those with a love of the technical and a need for external control, but it does it superbly.

Last week’s big smash party girl is back, shooting up the charts to number four this week. In the track, Ke$ha talks about being so madly in love with someone that she totally loses her mind, much like taking a drug. The album ‘Animal’ is a great market for Ke$ha’s success, having already sold a huge one million copies internationally. That’s some rise to fame.

5. Taio Cruz featuring Ludacris – Break Your Heart (last week – 4)

Down one for this piece of urban teamwork for Taio Cruz and Ludacris. The British star is far more popular stateside than back home, and will be looking to develop his career in the bigger American market in the future. Given that his style is far more suited to that market, Cruz can expect to go far, though his shows still go down a storm back in the UK. Down on this week.

Dramatic TV series Glee is coming into the final straight of the highly popular first series right now, and this album offers the perfect taster. Expect to recognize plenty of the tracks included here.

2. Stone Temple Pilots – Stone Temple Pilots (new entry)

Reformed rockers Stone Temple Pilots are back, having spent the best part of the last few years performing as parts of a selection of other popular bands. Having completed a whopping 71 date reunion tour, this is the band’s first recorded effort since then, and the fans are crawling all over it.

3. Justin Bieber – My World 2.0 (last week – 4)

IN SHORT: Bored of iPhone games that you can complete on a long bus journey? Welcome to The Impossible Game, which uses simple shapes to confuse the living daylights out of you. Like many of the best applications, simple is best here. On the surface, this looks so simple it’s almost silly, but it flatters to deceive, and as you watch you shapes move in ways that defy your instructions or ideas frustration reaches boiling point. Keep a cold shower within walking distance!

THE LOWDOWN: Motivated by levels, medals and a strangely compulsive desire to stop your orange block from falling into your black line (it really is that simple), you have to master your timing to get past the challenging sequences that make up ‘The Impossible Game’, and to win the awards that come with a high level of addiction. In truth, the game is poorly explained in the intro; you learn through experience and soon find that it basically comes down to hopping over spikes and making sure that you don’t land on the wrong part of your screen. Which, we’ll admit, sounds rubbish. but it just isn’t, apart from when you’re frustrated to the point of forcibly removing your hair and wishing you’d never downloaded the thing. When you do finally complete a level after several dozen attempts (okay, we admit it, a few hundred attempts), you’ll wonder why you did, but you’ll still play the next one.

It might be an album for the youngsters (there’s nothing here that everyone over twenty will probably have heard before, and it doesn’t touch the originals), but it could fit in well if you’re trying to please young and old at a party…

2. The Rolling Stones – Exile On Main Street (new entry)

Remake of the classic Rolling Stones album, still raved about by music fans and critic alike all these years later. This remastering does tighten the album up around the edges, which may not do a whole lot for the more committed, ragged fans of the band’s shambolic style, but there’s loads and loads here to love. 3. The Black Keys – Brothers (new entry)

Down one for autotune loving Jason, who marks his third consecutive single to enter the top three in the UK charts. Ridin Solo depicts Jason’s break up with his girlfriend, but is more of a happy track than a depressing one, exploring the stars ‘options following the break up and focusing on the clubbing lifestyle he’s waiting to explore. We didn’t expect him to wait to move on…

5. Eminem – Not Afraid (new entry)

The man who destroyed many a rap stereotype on his way to becoming a movie star and one of the world’s best known rebels is back after taking a back seat for the last few. Detroit’s biggest star will be hitting the festival circuit this year, no doubt introducing a whole new audience to festivals along the way, and ‘Not Afraid’ is just the intro he needs to get him off on the right foot. 1. Pendulum – Immersion (new entry)

Once hailed as the biggest Drum and Bass band of all time, these days energetic dance stars Pendulum have taken on a few more of their metal-head roots, and no longer produce the kind of bass-driven dance smashes that bought them fame in the first place. Still, Immersion is a new take on a band who have always been something other than what their public image suggests, and perhaps a more honest album for it. Well worth a listen. 2. Michael Buble – Crazy Love (last week – 19)

Whether you see him as a charismatic super star or the world’s most successful cover artist, there’s no doubting one thing: Michael Buble is here to stay. Most recent album ‘Crazy Love’ has been hanging around the top of the charts for months, but sees a 17 place rise this week to notch the number two position again. Not bad going. 3. Glee Cast – Glee The Music Volume 3, Showstoppers (new entry)

The latest in a long line of successful soundtracks accompanying the cult Glee TV show, volume three (’Showstoppers’) features the cast covering the likes of the Beatles, Olivia Newton John, U2, Lionel Richie and Aerosmith. Well, the kids have to be introduced to the classics somehow…

4. Katie Melua – The House (new entry)

Melua’s fourth album is her first without her traditional producer, and continues in much the same chilled out yet enticing vein of jazz music blended with tuneful, hook ridden pop. ‘The House’ is unlikely to become as big as her early material, but melua does successfully fuse plenty in the way of funky vocals alongside stand out singles like ‘the Flood’.

5. The Rolling Stones – Exile On Main Street (last week -1)

The re-mastered edition of the infamous and unforgettable smash album ‘Exile On Main Street’ has proved a touch controversial due to the nature of the remaster, but remains one of the most recognizable and sought after albums of all time. If you need an introduction to the Rolling Stones, firstly you should be ashamed of yourself, and secondly, get out and buy this one. Click here for some old school Rolling Stones ringtones.
