UK Singles Chart:
1. Owl City – Fireflies (last week – 2)
Owl City’s synth-infused electro hit (still hanging around near the top of the US charts months after its release) climbs one place in its second week to top the UK charts, too. Many point to Postal Service as an influence, though they were never this big…
2. Iyaz – Replay (last week – 1)
Recently marked out as the ‘song of the summer’ in Australia, Iyaz’ chart-busting effort is a winter track for the rest of us, but a mammoth one nonetheless. Only one week at number one for the Virgin Islands star, though.
3. Glee Cast – Don’t Stop Believing (last week – 5)
With the TV show taking off in a big way around the world (you can even buy the pilot episode alone on DVD), the Glee Cast continue to chart with a cover of Journey’s smash 80s hit.
4. 3OH!3 feat. Katy Perry – Starstruck (last week – 4)
Named after their Colorado area code, 3OH!3 follow up the US hit single ‘Don’t Trust Me’ with this Katy Perry collaboration, which remains at number four. They’ve been working with new star Ke$ha recently, too.
5. Sidney Samson feat. Wizard Sleeve – Riverside (Let’s Go) (last week – 3)
DJ from the major Dutch nightclub ‘The Matrixx’, Sidney Samson’s house track only reached number eight in his native Holland, yet still peaked at number three in the UK. Expect him in a club near you before too long.
UK Albums Chart:
1. Florence And The Machine – Lungs (last week – 1)
A 29th week on the charts for the indisputable album of 2009, now being used to publicize the film Slumdog Millionaire. An instant classic from the indomitable Florence Welch.
2. Paolo Nutini – Sunny Side Up (last week – 2)
He might not have had quite the critical acclaim of Ms. Welch, but Paolo Nutini is in his 34th chart week, with second album ‘Sunny Side Up’, which contains the singles ‘Candy’ and ‘Coming Up Easy’.
3. LostProphets – The Betrayed (new entry)
Third album from the Welsh rockers, who are known for their manic live performances and vicious chord progressions. The boys are clearly angry, and show it with impressive, haunting self control.
4. Justin Bieber – My World (new entry)
Fifteen year old R&B-influenced pop star signed by Island Records under the advice of Usher, Justin Bieber has found fame young, with his debut album My World already a huge smash stateside. Welcome to the UK, Justin.
5. Lady Gaga – The Fame (last week – 4)
One year and two weeks, and still counting. The Fame is one of those albums that just doesn’t go away, and has taken Lady Gaga from a New York suburb to international fame. More to come, too, we’re willing to bet.
US Singles Chart:
1. Ke$ha – Tik Tok (last week – 1)
Having completed her transformation from country star to pop-loving party animal, Ke$ha’s chart acclaim and pop progress is every growing, with international cover stories and TV appearances growing by the day.
2. Lady Gaga – Bad Romance (last week – 2)
Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance happened while she was on tour after releasing the incredible ‘The Fame’ album in early 2009. The song seems to have struck a chord with a large number of music lovers, too.
3. Jay-Z & Alicia Keys – Empire State Of Mind(last week – 3)
Nineteen weeks on the chart for the Jay Z and Alicia combo, from Jay Z’s album ‘The Blueprint 3’. The track’s still gaining substantial international airplay, with no sign of an imminent let up in love.
4. Young Money Featuring Lloyd – BedRock (last week –
Second single from rap super group Young Money Entertainment (featuring the ever popular Lil Wayne) finally hits the top five on its eighth week on the charts, making it this week’s only new entry at the tip of the tracks.
5. Iyaz – Replay (last week – 4)
Amazingly – given it’s international notoriety – Iyaz never made number one in the US with Replay (though he did do so in the UK last week), yet the young star continues to make waves in terms of recognisability, and is being touted as ‘that song’ for the Christmas period.
US Albums Chart:
1. Vampire Weekend – Contra (new entry)
Straight in at number one for Vampire Weekend’s second album, which sees the New Yorkers make a definitive breakthrough into the mainstream, having been the darling of music bloggers since the release of their self titled debut.
2. Susan Boyle – I Dreamed A Dream (last week – 2)
While rumors persist in the press about abnormal behavior from the seemingly mild-mannered Boyle (the latest reference disruptive singing in a first class airport waiting room), her album continues to sell in astonishing quantities around the world.
3. Ke$ha – Animal (last week – 1)
It seems party animal Ke$ha’s album may not be quite as long lasting as her impressive single, having already dropped two places off the peak of the album charts only a week after its release.
4. Lady Gaga – The Fame (last week – 3)
We’re losing count of the sheer volume of sales on this particular album, which has now totted up an astonishing 64 weeks at the top end of the US singles charts, most of them right here in the top five. Lady Gaga’s set for life, though we doubt that’ll stop her carrying right on…
5. Alicia Keys – The Element Of Freedom (last week – 4)
Alicia Key’s least prolific album to date is still an impressive feat of powerful lyrics and diva-dom. Being held off the number one spot by the massively popular Susan Boyle is nothing to be sniffed at, and Alicia maintains her status as a true R&B superstar.
