UK Singles Chart:
1. Jason DeRulo – In My Head (new entry)
Straight in at number one for newcomer Jason DeRulo with only his second single. This is quite a departure from Jason’s first effort ‘Whatcha Say’, with his latest taking on an edgier, rockier sound than we expected, and garnering ample radio play. A great start to a promising career.
2. Florence and the Machine – You Got The Dirtee Love (last week – 2)
Another week at number two for this exceptional BRIT Awards performance, a real must see. Florence Welch brings her captivating, soaring vocals, while Dizzee Rascal adds yet another new dimension to this well-worn classic with his
3. Rihanna – Rude Boy (last week – 6)
The second single from Rihanna’s ‘Rated R’ album, her fourth effort, one that’s oddly taken the same title as an earlier album by rock superstars Queens Of The Stone Age. Rude Boy is up three, and shows some intriguing ragga elements in showing love to the bad boys.
4. Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed (new entry)
Ms./ Goulding’s been grabbing praise from the music press as ‘one to watch for 2010’ for the past few months, and seems to have made the breakthrough with this smash hit second single, already peaking 48 places higher than her first effort. Ellie’s definitely one to watch, blending her subtle vocals with electro pop undertones.
5. Alicia Keys – Empire State Of Mind Part II (last week – 5)
A non mover for Alicia Key’s repost to her own song. This kind of self response (though admittedly the original is a Jay-Z duet) is an unusual commercial move, but seems to have paid off for the singer, with an immediate angle for fans hooked on the popular first track.
UK Albums Chart:
1. Lady Gaga – The Fame (last week – 2)
On her 59th week on the UK album charts, Lady Gaga has once again found herself at the top of the pile. This exceptional, if less than new album features efforts like Poker Face and Paparazzi, but not latest single Bad Romance. You’ve probably heard most of it already…
2. Glee Cast – Glee The Music Season One (last week – 1)
Down one for the musical soundtrack from the series popular with younger teenagers. This odd album features the show’s stars covering tracks by major musicians from the past few decades, as well as a few of their own.
3. Alicia Keys – The Element Of Freedom (last week – 4)
There was a time, only a few weeks ago, when we wondered if this album might be Alicia Keys biggest flop, having failed to get anywhere near number one to start out. It got there in the end, though, and it’s been hanging around ever since. With a voice like hers, we can’t say we’re all that surprised.
4. Florence and the Machine – Lungs (last week – 3)
Another album that just keeps selling, Florence is down one, but sitting in the top five a full 34 weeks into your debut album is no mean feat, and tracks like ‘Kiss With A Fist’ might keep her here for sometime yet.
5. Marina and the Diamonds – The Family Jewels (new entry)
Another one of those hugely hyped new artists for 2010, Marina and the Diamonds is all attitude, and may actually be a tad disappointed to only make number five with her debut this week. Of course, anyone else would be proud, but Marina aims high…
US Singles Chart:
1. The Black Eyed Peas – Imma Be (last week – 3)
Yet another number one for the indomitable Black Eyed Peas, who benefit from the Haiti single’s short lived sales performance (it drops to number six in its second week). The album ‘The Energy Never Dies’ is still selling by the bucketload, too.
2. Ke$ha – Tik Tok (last week – 2)
The world’s newest young pop star could probably never work again at this stage, if she wanted too. Tik Tok has proved a real career maker, flying to the top of the charts and staying there for approaching half a year.
3. Young Money Featuring Lloyd – BedRock (last week – 4)
New Orleans based rap collaborative that doubtless grabs sales by the bucket load due to the contributions of local star Lil Wayne. It’s a catchy track, though, and it’s difficult not to love anything from New Orleans right now. The tornado recovery is in full swing.
4. Lady Gaga – Bad Romance (last week – 5)
I think we all know more about the lyrical side of Lady Gaga’s love life at this stage then perhaps we want to, but to be fair, this is one catchy song, a serious infectious pop tune.
5. Lady Antebellum – Need You Now (last week – 6)
Lady Antebellum are inarguably the biggest name in country for 2010 so far, but making the break into the mainstream is some achievement for a genre that normally struggles, even in its American heartland. They can expect a few awards come the end of the year.
US Albums Chart:
1. Sade – Soldier Of Love (last week – 1)
It seems like Sade’s been gone so long that it’s genuinely difficult to remember her being a mainstream pop act. That’s all changed with ‘Soldier Of Love’, though, which claims a second week at the top of the charts following an impressive advertising campaign.
2. Lady Antebellum – Need You Now (last week – 2)
Lady Antebellum double up on their country chart superstardom act, holding top five positions in both the singles and album charts, which means the group have the top selling country records in both categories this year.
3. The Black Eyed Peas – The E.N.D (last week –
A 37th week on the chart for this Black Eyed Peas effort, which climbs again from number 8. If radio play for earlier single ‘I Gotta Feeling’ is anything to go by, it could be around for an age yet, too.
4. Lady Gaga – The Fame (last week – 7)
If anyone can top the Black Eyed Peas, though, it’s Lady Gaga, who’s debut has now amassed a colossal 67 weeks on the charts and re-enters the top five this week. Unstoppable.
5. Lil Wayne – Rebirth (last week – 4)
A reference to both his new rockier style and the improving fortunes of his native New Orleans, Lil Wayne’s style has changed dramatically. It’s an odd, but interesting twist.
