UK and US Ringtone Charts: 31st January 2010

UK Singles Chart:

1. Owl City – Fireflies (last week – 1)

Owl City, it seems, have found the perfect blend of pop and fashionable synths to take over the charts on both sides of the pond. Love them or loath them, this band couldn’t be much more of the minute if they tried, and they just keep selling.

2. Glee Cast – Don’t Stop Believing (last week – 3)

Have the UK album charts become just as predictable as the US equivalent? If this week is anything to go by, it seems so. The increasingly popular ‘Glee’ is the only notable mover, going up a whole one place with their cover track, at the expense of…

3. Iyaz – Replay (last week – 2)

The boy from the British Virgin Islands, whose hit is without doubt the R&B smash of the winter. Iyaz – aside from his obvious claim to fame as Sean Kingston’s prodigy – seems to have come from nowhere, and looks like he’s here to stay.

4. 3OH!3 feat. Katy Perry – Starstruck (last week – 4)

A third week in a row at number four for this collaborations between Russell Brand’s wife to be (heaven help her) and the newest Colorado stars. Their seventh week on the charts.

5. Sidney Samson feat. Wizard Sleeve – Riverside (Let’s Go) (last week – 5)

Another singer who seemed to come from nowhere to make an impact on the UK charts, Sidney Samson is a relatively obscure Dutch club DJ. Or at least he was, up until his first appearance on the charts a month ago.

UK Albums Chart:

1. Paolo Nutini – Sunny Side Up (last week – 2)

The sales Paulo Nutini continues to generate with this soulful album are simply astonishing, with Sunny Side Up yet again rising to the top of the UK album charts in its 35th week

2. Alicia Keys – The Element Of Freedom (last week – 8)

Alicia Keys, in fact, might have a little bit of a grudge with Paolo at this stage. While her latest album has flown back up the charts to number two, it remains her only effort not to top the album charts to date.

3. Florence And The Machine – Lungs (last week – 1)

Many critics choice for the album of 2009, the exceptionally haunting and infectious ‘Lungs’ launched Florence and her seemingly unstoppable machine on the world a mere thirty weeks ago. She’s hear to stay.

4. Andre Rieu – Forever Vienna (last week – 6)

A rare chart appearance for a genuine classical star; Andre Reiu is famed for his impact on the waltz in classical music, and has based his career around a combination of conducting and playing the violin. The Dutchman’s now 60.

5. Lady Gaga – The Fame (last week – 4)

55 weeks, and still in the top five. Many of us are starting to wonder if the indomitable Lady Gaga will ever leave the charts. One thing’s for sure: she’s a pop smash of massive proportions.

US Singles Chart:

1. Ke$ha – Tik Tok (last week – 1)

Pop’s newest party-animal star stays at number one for yet another week, and continues to develop a reputation that the album ‘Animal’ seems to have only enhanced. A definite one to watch.

2. Taylor Swift – Today Was A Fairytale (new entry)

Released to promote the movie ‘Valentines Day’, Today Was A Fairytale is sappy stuff from Taylor, and featured at the Grammy Awards ceremony recently. More cheesy than her usual brand of country pop, but the timing’s good.

3. Lady Gaga – Bad Romance (last week – 2)

She’s probably well over her Bad Romance by now, but Lady Gaga’s infectious track is still pulling strings with plenty of listeners, though not quite enough to make number one. This marks the tracks 13th week on the charts.

4. Young Money Featuring Lloyd – BedRock (last week – 4)

Young Money are getting plenty of radioplay state side these days, and on their ninth week on the chart they remain at their current peak. It seems to be the slow builders that hang around the longest, so keep an eye on this one.

5. Justin Bieber featuring Ludacris – Baby (new entry)

A teenage sensation and a rapper? That’s a seriously odd mix, but it seems to work for the kids. Canadian starlet Justin Bieber is that darling of just about everything these days, so expect everything he touches to turn to gold.

US Albums Chart:

1. Hope For Haiti Now (new entry)

The album affiliated with the mammoth Haiti fundraising concert held all over the world, Hope For Haiti Now is for a great cause, and features some great music, too. Leonard Cohen, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce and Lennon and McCartney all feature.

2. Susan Boyle – I Dreamed A Dream (last week – 2)

The insuppressible Susan Boyle just keeps selling album after album, with I Dreamed A Dream marking its ninth week on the charts with superb sales figures and no sign of letting up. She’s proof that ever so often, reality TV does create stars.

3. Lady Gaga – The Fame (last week – 4)

65 weeks in the US album charts, and Fame shows no signs whatsoever of letting up. Lady Gaga comes from a run-down district of New York, and can now count herself amongst the richest stars in pop. What a meteoric rise.

4. Spoon – Transference (new entry)

Texan’s Spoon score their biggest hit to date with their seventh album, selling an impressive 53,000 copies in the first week after its release. Features the single ‘Written In Reverse’.

5. 2010 Grammy Nominees (new entry)

A who’s who of modern day pop music, this album covers the stars of the latest prestigious Grammy Awards ceremony. King Of Leon, Black Eyed Peas, Pink and Katy Perry all feature, alongside 16 other equally notable names. Perfect for the pop lover.
