UK Singles Chart:
1. Tinie Tempah – Pass Out (new entry)
It’s taken South-London based Nigerian Tinie Tempah five years of rapping to break his way into the mainstream, but there’s no denying he’s done it now. Straight in at number one for his first charting single ‘Time Out’. No doubt he’s drinking champagne down the club every night of the week to celebrate.
2. Rihanna – Rude Boy (last week – 3) – SONG OF THE WEEK!
Rihanna’s on the up yet again, and this latest single – up to number two from last week – covers those bad boys that some girls just can’t help falling for. She’s obviously met a few herself (perhaps she showed them her milkshake), but there’s something deep and infectious about Rude Boy that takes the track beyond your more typical R&B. It’s by far the stand out track on fourth album Rated R.
3. Jason DeRulo – In My Head (last week – 1)
Insanely infectious pseudo R&B track from the ever more popular Jason DeRule drops from number one, but remains one of the most radio-friendly singles of the past month or two. Typical DeRulo, in other words.
4. Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed (last week – 4)
As a new breakthrough, perhaps it’s not surprising that Ellie Goulding’s looking like she might even work her way up the chart with her latest effort. Ever increasing radio play and a media crowd gathering on the horizon certainly can’t do Ms. Goulding any harm.
5. Florence and the Machine – You Got The Dirtee Love (last week – 2)
Rarely does a BRIT Award live track have such an impact, despite the awards obvious prestige. Florence’s unlikely combo with Dizzee Rascal struck a nerve with many, though, and is still hanging around as a single three weeks later.
UK Albums Chart:
1. Ellie Goulding – Lights (new entry)
Ellie certainly seems to be justifying the hype, having immediately shot in at number one with her debut album. We can expect to see plenty of the young singer songwriter in the enar future, with her BRIT award win and BBC Sound of 2010 win marking her territory.
2. Lady Gaga – The Fame (last week – 1)
We’re sure Ms. Gaga can live with a brief period off the top spot for her intensely popular debut, which is now 60s weeks into its shelf life. Plenty of albums have stopped selling altogether by now, while this one is still going strong and has reached quadruple platinum.
3. Alicia Keys – The Element Of Freedom (last week – 3)
A 12th week on the charts for Alicia, whose album was initially hailed on this site and many others as a flop next to her previous efforts. It turns out it was just a slow burner, and it stays at number three this week.
4. Glee Cast – Glee The Music Season One (last week – 2)
The Glee Cast have taken the musical TV show and used their series of cover songs to make the stars into little less than full blown pop star in their own right. This quirky covers compilation continues to rack up the sales.
5. Florence and the Machine – Lungs (last week – 4)
Florence and the Machine had Marina and the Diamonds touted as her ‘replacement’ by many in the press recently. 35 weeks after this album’s release, though, it’s still outselling Marina in her second week. Florence is still queen, it seems.
