About BachOften credited with bringing the baroque period of classical music to maturity by stringing together it's numerous strands, German composer Johann Sebastian Bach could be said to have perfected the techniques his predecessors formed. Bizarrely, Bach was more respected in his lifetime for his organ-playing ability than his work as a composer, and it took until the early 19th century, more than 50 years after his death, for the composer to become widely acknowledged for his 'before his time' efforts. He's now regarded as one of the greatest composers in history. Bach's style is heavily influenced by South American, Italian and French as well as German composers, though he was greatly exposed to the music of his native Germany by moving around several cities throughout his lifetime. Author Lewis Thomas once suggested that if human beings were to use one thing to communicate with aliens, they should transmit Bach.
