More recently lead singer Paul Banks has embarked on a solo career, though the band continue to work on the material for their fourth album. Their popularity saw Interpol move to major label Capital in 2006, from cult indie label Matador. Their prolific nature leads to an unusually high number of 'EP' format records from the New Yorkers, which have included a live album and a collector's item early self-recorded demo tape. They initially formed in a New York university philosophy class.
