About Roots ManuvaIt can't have come as the biggest shock to his friends when Rodney Smith renamed himself Roots Manuva before releasing his debut album. His distinctly British lyrical edge (he even raps about cheese on toast) and poverty stricken London upbringing are key influences on Roots Manuva's style, which incorporates dub, funk and hip-hop influences alongside his more straightforward rap sounds. Despite being intensely popular in rap circles (and a fairly well known name amongst music lovers in general, too), Manuva has managed only three top 50 albums out of his six efforts; number 22 hit 'Slime & Reason' being his most impressive effort. 2005 track Colossal Insight has been his most successful singles effort, peaking at number 33. Nevertheless, Roots Manuva has still headlined a festival, performed with world music superstars Ozomalti, and won himself substantial international respect so far in his intriguing career.
