About Sister SledgeAn American R&B and Soul group from the US, Sister Sledge formed in Pennsylvania in 1973 comprising of four sisters. Kim Sledge, Debbie Sledge, Joni Sledge and Kathy Sledge. All of the sisters were born during the fifties although there is another 'sledge' sister, Carol, who is not part of the band.The group began singing in churches in the Philadelphia area and after being discovered by ~Charles Simmons in 1975 had a hit in the UK singles charts with 'Mama Never Told Me'. They became famous a few years later for their 1979 single 'We Are Family', which reached number 1 in the US R&B chart. The single 'Frankie' released in 1985 would later stay at number 1 in the UK charts for a month.In 1997 Sister Sledge released 'African Eyes' which received favourable reviews from many critics, despite the band never again seeing the success it enjoyed in the 70s and 80s.
