The band is most well known for their experimental and 'noise rock' sounds which secured them as one of the most groundbreaking acts in the rise of alternative music.Current members of the band include Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley and Mark Iblod. The band has produced 16 studio albums over 7 different record labels.Formed in New York in 1981, it wasn't until the 90s that Sonic Youth saw any large scale commercial success. It was in 1994 that the band released their most successful US album, 'Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star'.Sonic Youth are currently producing an album which will be released in 2009.
