About WagnerKnown for his operas, which - unusually - he wrote both the vocal and musical parts for, Richard Wagner is a 19th century German composer noted for his use of music to characterise his different operatic characters. His influence on musical thought was significant, being one of the first composers to involve other aspects of art - poetry, visuals and drama - alongside his music in what he called Gasamkunstwerk (total artwork), and building his own personal opera house that allowed him to perform in this way. Wagner's best known for the popular opera Tristan and Isolde, and divided many composers, who were often heavily opinionated on Wagner and fell into 'with' or 'against' groups. Controversies still surround Wagner's political perspectives, with his anti-Jewish attitude well known, and various other forms of racism suggested. Many critics argue, despite dying half a century before the Second World War, that Wagner had almost Nazi leanings.
